Most of the local school districts in the United States require the elementary and secondary schools in their jurisdictions to have school nurses that should be present and always available. Since a school nurse could also qualify as a health educator, many nurses today have studied or took up nursing health education programs, which are academic programs consisting of short-term courses or undergraduate or postgraduate degree programs.

The ASN program consists of three degree programs consisting of Associate of Applied Science in Nursing, Associate of Science in Nursing, and Associate Degree in Nursing, with each of them lasting for two years. The BSN is a four-year degree program.
